Utah radio/sports traditions and the new order

What prompted the memories and musings below: DJ and PK have left 1280 The Zone to go to 1320 KFAN. It's not an unexpected move what with David James years of being allied to the Jazz/KJZZ broadcasting side, which is now, from what I hear, running KFAN.

So now we have in the Utah market these ententes for broadcasting profit:

NBA: KJZZ/KUTV (news parters, talent sharers) and KJZZ/KFAN (Larry Miller's broadcast brothers, one owned, one operated (LMA?)) under the Utah Jazz umbrella. More on KUTV in a minute.

NCAA: And of course, as I heard at a recent KSL radio event, the 50-year relationship between KSL and BYU. BYU's TV partner for games is now the Mtn., with a little duplication by KBYU, but KSL-TV's still getting profit out of its ally, BYU, via Bronco Mendenhall's segments on SportsBeat and so on.

NCAA: Leaving Utah still heard by listeners of old-timey partner KALL, now on 700 instead of erstwhile frequency 910. Utah games are mainly on The mtn./Versus/CSTV complex. But the coaches show and other TV now is in the hands of new partner KTVX.

These pieces didn't come together overnight, but if they had, Ute fans would certainly remark on how Utah's one-time stalward TV partner, KUTV, has now subsumed itself to the pro league hotshot in town. And left Utah to rebuilding KTVX. There's nothing wrong with this change, of course. But back in the day, KUTV was as synonymous with Utah as KSL is now. But that's a rarity in business partnerships... true longevity.
